How to make a rocking chair

Rocking in a rocking chair with a drink in your hand on a gorgeous summer’s day. Life just doesn’t get any better than that. Plus a rocking chair looks cool and is a great eye-catcher in your home or garden. A rocking chair is a piece of furniture to be proud of, especially if you’ve made it all by yourself. In this step-by-step, we show you how.

Step 1: Take the plywood board and mark off the side pieces and the connecting pieces, following this sawing plan:
1: 60 x 7.5 cm
2: 60 x 15 cm
3: 60 x 40 cm
4: 60 x 20 cm

Use a piece of flexible wood or pliant plastic to mark out the curve on the bottom of the side pieces. Also mark out 8 boards of 70 x 15 cm.
Step 2: Saw all the pieces.
Step 3: Lay the side pieces one on top of the other and use the sander to produce an identical smooth curve on both.
Step 4: Take the pine and saw the following pieces to size:
A: 2 x 7.5 cm
B: 2 x 15 cm
C: 2 x 40 cm
D: 2 x 20 cm
E: 2 x 38 cm
F: 2 x 62 cm
Step 5: Prime the sawn pieces and leave them plenty of time to dry.
Step 6: Fasten all the sawn pieces to the short sides of the connecting pieces.
A to 1
B to 2
C to 3
D to 4
Step 7: Screw and glue connecting pieces 1 to 4 between the side pieces as shown in the figure.
Step 8: Fasten pieces E and F to the side pieces. E goes below where the seat will be and F behind where the backrest will be.
Step 9: Start fastening the back pieces to the side pieces. The lower back piece rests on the side pieces. Ensure that the boards project to the same extent on each side and are nicely aligned.
Step 10: Now attach the seating pieces to the lower back piece and work from the back to the front.
Step 11: Fill the screw holes and transitions where needed. Give them plenty of time to dry and use sandpaper to ensure they are all completely smooth.
Step 12: Paint the rocking chair in your chosen colour and leave it to dry. You get the best look with two layers of paint.
Step 13: Place the chair in the sun and relax after your hard work.
